VIO at the American Ski Classic!

We have been working with the team from VIO for a little while now but did not officially get the chance to meet until recently at the Korbel California Champagne American Ski Classic. They are the leaders in point-of-view video technology, digital helmet cameras and cam accessories. If you saw legends like Daron Rahlves or Franz Klammer with a POV camera on, rest assured it was the VIO POV 1.5.

Check out their videos below from the American Ski Classic.

VIO POV at the AMERICAN SKI CLASSIC:

VIO POV 1.5 on TV8!

We will be working with VIO across all our events including the Teva Mountain Games and the Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week. We've already started documenting our team's training for the Teva Mountain Games and look forward to posting some of that content, POV-style, in the coming months.

In the meantime, check out some POV footage from the 2008 Teva Mountain Games that was shot with the POV 1 last year. The footage was shot on Homestake Creek as part of the Bud Light Lime Steep Creek Challenge. Enjoy!

Damian's Take - Savion Glover, Ballroom and More!

DAMIAN's TAKE - EPISODE 1:

Spring has just arrived, but the summer will be here soon! It’s been an exciting month of planning for the 2009 Vail International Dance Festival– and it promises to be the best season yet.

Two weeks ago in New York I saw Savion Glover perform his latest show at the Joyce Theatre... it was simply spectacular! You won't want to miss Savion in his two different performances in Vail on July 27 and 28 – he is quite literally the best at what he does in the world, and after seeing him in action just now I can't wait to see him on our stages this coming summer.

Chris Wheeldon and I having been talking about Morphoses and how this year's residency in Vail will be even better than the last two. He is again bringing an all-star cast of dancers from all around the world to perform for us. They’ll take the stage at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for Morphoses 3.0 on Friday, August 7. In addition, for a very special UpClose evening on August 6, I have asked Chris and his company to join me in celebrating the uniquely gifted ballerina Wendy Whelan. In celebration of her brilliant career, we are putting together an evening full of performances of the works that made her a star, with Wendy's own voice being heard on how she has become the inspiring artist she is. Wendy and I were students together at the School of American Ballet and have spent our careers in tandem. I am thrilled to be able to share with you the sides of this great dancer the audience never gets to see, and to put on this show honoring her magnificent dancing.

In Ballroom news, I heard from our Ballroom's Best organizer and star Hanna Karttunen with casting updates for the August 10 performance, which is selling out fast! You’ll be thrilled to know that among the new couples she is bringing this year are JT and Tomas, last years World Champions in the American Smooth Style. You might have recently seen them dancing brilliantly on PBS's American Ballroom Challenge, and you won't want to miss them on this years Ballroom Best showcase! Tickets are already going fast for this show, which has sold out every year since we introduced it in 2006, so buy early to avoid the disappointment of missing the show in August!

One last thing: on our Festival Highlights show on August 2, we are thrilled to have appearances by artists from Morphoses, Miami City Ballet and American Ballet Theater superstars Ethan Stiefel and Gillian Murphy among others. But we are also going to have a performance by one of Vail's most treasured arts supporters: Argie Tang, fresh from her triumph conducting the New York Philharmonic last summer, will take to the stage with yours truly in a dance specially made for the occasion. We will be joined on stage by the children of our Celebrate the Beat (CTB) dance education program.

Argie was the winning bidder on "Dancing with Damian" at the Black Diamond Ball benefit auction last fall, and we decided nothing could be more perfect to than do our dance as part of the Celebrate the Beat program, which Argie loves so much and which is making such a difference for local children.

Since we introduced Celebrate the Beat as part of the 2007 festival, the program has expanded into the Eagle County school system both during the school year and in the summer. This spring, CTB is enriching the lives of over 1,300 kids as part of their school curriculum. The program is centered around inspirational music and dance, using the arts to teach children how to excel through teamwork and creativity. It's an amazing program, and you won't want to miss Argie and these incredible children on August 2 at the Ford Amphitheater.

I'll be giving you more news next month, until then be sure to check the website www.vaildance.org for updates on the 2009 Festival.

All the best---
Damian Woetzel

Vail International Dance Festival Preview!

As the snow continues to fall here in the Vail Valley we find it incredibly interesting, and somewhat strange to be posting about the 2009 Vail International Dance Festival slated for July 27 - August 11.

However, we just received an amazing preview for the festival courtesy of Plum Vail that we wanted to share with our readers.

Check out the piece below and plan on joining us for the 2009 VIDF July 27 - August 11.

Birds Of Prey Flashback

Check out a nice piece courtesy of Plum Vail from the 2008 Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week. We really enjoyed the piece below since it touches on the difference between ski racing in Europe and our singular Men's World Cup race in the United States - The Birds of Prey. Obviously there is a much larger following for the sport abroad -- something we hope to achieve here locally someday.

As the snow continues to fall here in the Vail Valley we are excited to be posting about the Birds of Prey. Mark your calendars for the 2009 Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week December 4 - 7.

VVF At Sport Accord

The Vail Valley Foundation and Vail Resorts will have a presence at one of the world's largest annual international sport gatherings when the 2009 Sport Accord opens Monday, March 23, in Denver, Colorado.

Sportaccord is a 5-day gathering of 1500 leading representatives from international sport. The annual convention is held in a different country each year and encompasses the Congress and General Assemblies of over 100 international sports federations and their related associations. Its mission is to offer the sports community a powerful opportunity to come together on a global scale, in an exclusive and authoritative networking environment, to build relationships, share knowledge and develop ideas.

In addition to disseminating information on both the Foundation as an event organizer and the Vail Valley as a prime location for events, the VVF will also have the opportunity to discuss their potential 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships bid with key members of the International Ski Federation who will be in attendance.

Since 2003, when Sportaccord took place in Madrid, the event has been held in Lausanne, Berlin, Seoul, Beijing and Athens, allowing attendees to experience the culture and hospitality of colleagues all over the world, and event-owners to visit cities and venues interested in hosting sporting events. In 2010, the event will be in Dubai, April 26 – 30, 2010.

Estonian National Symphony Orchestra Photos

Last night the VPAC stage was quite literally busting at the seams to accommodate the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra with Joyce Yang.

The 82-year-old symphony orchestra featured 100 members and was likely the largest ensemble to ever take the VPAC stage. Check out some photos below from last night's HUGE performance!

Remember The Titans -- Ford Cup Team Gold

Unlike the Virginia high school football team in the 2000 film “Remember The Titans” that was forced to overcome desegregation and racial tension to become champions, the 2009 Korbel Ford Cup version of the Titans was literally one big happy family…the D’Agostino family. In fact, the only member of Team Titans not named D’Agostino was their Legend of Skiing team captain, Italian Isolde Kostner.

But just as the T.C. Williams football team overcame adversity to win the state championship, the Ski Classic’s Team Titans proved that blood is thicker than water, dispatching all challengers en route to the Korbel Ford Cup team gold medal Saturday afternoon at Golden Peak.

Clad in identical one-piece racing suits, The Titans, comprised of Franco D’Agostino, Luis Alfredo D’Agostino, Luis Alberto D’Agostino, Francisco D’Agostino and Kostner, worked their way through the two-day maze of pool competition to earn a berth in the quarterfinal round of the Korbel Ford Cup Finals.

However, like the movie Titans, the dream almost came to an abrupt end in their opening bracket match-up as Team Titans found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 score against the Peak Vision Team, captained by former U.S. Ski Team member Terry Ahola, with only three head-to-head matches remaining.

Digging deep, Luis Alberto and Francisco D’Agostino came up with victories before Kostner, the 2002 Olympic silver medalist in Downhill sealed the deal with a victory over Ahola, propelling her team into the semi-finals.

From there, it was a relatively easy march to the Finals as the Titans defeated the Vail Cascade Team to earn the right to face Team American Airlines Domestic in the gold medal round.

Once again, it was Kostner who delivered the gold as The Titans jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage over American Airlines, only to see Holly Flanders’ team battle back to even the score with just two racers left at the top of the hill.

With the team gold medal on the line, Flanders, the 1982 World Cup Downhill runner-up, took the early lead, only to see Kostner pull even midway down the Golden Peak racecourse. The two Legends battled to the finish, with the Italian taking the victory by a slim nine hundredths of a second margin.

Klammer And Wiberg Claim Legends Giant Slalom Crowns As 2009 American Ski Classic Kicks Off At Golden Peak

The 2009 Korbel California Champagne American Ski Classic got off to a fast and raucous start Thursday evening at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak as “The Kaiser”, Austria’s Franz Klammer, and “The Ice Queen”, Sweden’s Pernilla Wiberg outdistanced the rest of their respective Legends competitors to take top honors in the Volvo Legends Giant Slalom event.

Klammer, the 1976 Olympic gold medalist in Downhill, earned a spot in the finals by dispatching American rookie Legend Chris Puckett before downing another newcomer to the Volvo Legends competition, Austrian Fritz Strobl. The gold medal match-up proved to be an all-Austrian affair as Klammer bested Hannes Trinkl to take the win, while Strobl held off Norwegian Stein Halsnes to collect the bronze.

On the ladies’ side of the brackets, Wiberg took out American Barbara Ferries Hendeerson in the quarterfinal round before notching a semi-final win over former U.S. Ski Team member Holly Flanders to propel her into the finals. Close after one run, Wiberg, matched up against Canada’s Karen Stemmle, took advantage of a second run mistake by the Canadian and breezed to an easy victory.

The 2009 Korbel California Champagne American Ski Classic will continue on Friday with the opening day of Korbel Ford Cup celebrity team competition

Cindy Nelson - 2009 Legend Of Honor

As a small girl growing up in Minnesota, skiing became a way of life for Cindy Nelson. She donned her first pair of skis at the tender age of two at the family-owned and operated resort in Lutsen and never looked back. That way of life, passion for the sport and fearless attitude will be recognized March 21 as Nelson, the grand dame of American ladies ski racing, will be inducted into the International Ski Racing Hall of Fame as 2009 Legend of Honor during the Korbel California Champagne American Ski Classic.

Nelson made an immediate impression on both the U.S. Team and the World Cup circuit in 1971, scoring World Cup points in the first two races of a long and distinguished career that would continue through 1985. She represented her country as a member of four Olympic and World Championships teams, while also collecting a total of seven World Cup victories and seven U.S. National titles.

* Nelson at the 1974 World Cup.

One of the highlights of her 14-year career came at the 1976 Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria as Nelson earned the bronze medal in downhill. She added a pair of World Championships medals to her trophy case, earning the combined silver medal in 1980 in Lake Placid and skiing her way to a downhill silver medal in 1982 in Schladming, Austria. However, one of her more remarkable feats occurred in 1984 when she tore knee ligaments in December but was back in the starting gate exactly six weeks later to compte in the Sarajevo Olympics, thanks to the handiwork of Dr. Richard Steadman, who replaced the ligaments with Gore-Tex.

Nelson remained actively involved with skiing following her retirement from the U.S. Team, serving as Director of Skiing for Vail Associates for seven years. She also served as a member of the organizing committee for the 1989 World Alpine Ski Championships in Vail and Beaver Creek. She started her own business in 1992, focusing her energy on her work in television, personal appearances and consulting. When not busy with her duties at Cindy Nelson Ltd., or her second passion, golf, Nelson takes an active interest in nonprofit organizations, serving as a trustee board member of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Foundation and the Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Foundation.

Nelson will join previous Legend of Honor recipients including:

1985 Birger Ruud
1986 Dick Durrance & Gretchen Fraser
1987 Toni Seelos
1988 Stein Eriksen

Rave Reviews for Estonian National Symphony Orchestra

We are excited to be bringing the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra with pianist Joyce Yang to the VPAC on Sunday, March 22 for their first and only Colorado visit. This performance rounds out the 2008-2009 winter VPAC Classical Series , a season which included highlights like The Irish Tenors, Quartet San Francisco, Interpreti Veneziani and Chris Botti.

We wanted to post a glowing review following a recent performance in Florida. The writer, Alan Becker paints a much more detailed picture of what our guests can expect at this much anticipated encore performance. Tickets for Estonian National Symphony Orchestra with Joyce Yang are still available and can be purchased HERE.

Before you read any further, we encourage you to set the tone of the review below by listening to some music from the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra:

Estonian Orchestra a Distinct Success with Help from Young Pianist

Founded 81 years ago, but now making its first North American tour, the Estonian National Symphony made an appearance Monday at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Nikolai Alexeev conducted a program that included a piece by the noted Estonian Arvo Part along with some well-worn favorites.

Most readers will wonder if the orchestra is different from most symphonic ensembles we are familiar with. The answer is a definite yes. The Estonians do not sound like what we are used to, do not act like what we are used to, but have a special excellence all their own. The standard of discipline is high and so is the protocol. There is no warm-up orchestral din onstage preceding the concert. The Estonians enter together and seat themselves quietly to await the arrival of the conductor. The concertmaster makes no grand entrance and receives no separate applause. When the conductor arrives all players stand to honor him. Of special note is the large number of women in the orchestra, all of them attractively slim and trim.

In Part’s Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten , and the other works, bowing is unified, apparently decided early on. It makes for a more intense and less silken string tone then most major orchestras. It also provides a uniquely distinctive sound, setting them slightly apart from what we’re used to. Part’s 1977 piece is most beautiful, sort of a reverse minimalism in which an extended string threnody is set against the ever-present tolling of a bell. The work, only five minutes in duration, takes the Renaissance form of a mensuration canon several steps beyond and creates a piece of great sadness. It was devastatingly performed, just as it should be.

The young Korean pianist Joyce Yang was born in 1986 and gained international renown when she was awarded the silver medal at the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Her performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 set her apart from the crowd in its emphasis not only on the percussive elements of the score, but on its lyricism as well. After the opening clarinet solo, conductor Alexeev whipped the orchestra into a frenzy of speed and dynamics that was easily matched by his soloist. Although slight in appearance, Yang uses her entire body to thrust forward all the rhythmic intricacies and powerful forte attacks required. When release does occur, as in the Andantino’s variations, her ability to coax the most delicately shaded sonorities from the keyboard was amazing. The orchestra, and its wonderfully thick and reedy woodwinds, caught details mostly lost by other groups. For this we must praise Alexeev, and his superb control–extending even to the molding of phrases from his fingertips.

Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 has seen many performances over the years, and bringing something new to the music is not an easy task. Alexeev and his group may have whipped up the tempos sufficiently to raise a few eyebrows, but what excitement they created. With ample opportunity for those winds to shine, the music sounded just right, and reminded one of just what has been missing from all those other performances.

Check us out on Boulder Vidcast!

We threw a little party for media at the Spot Gym in Boulder in honor of the Teva Mountain Games on March 2. We invited our partners at USA Climbing and a bunch of Boulder/Denver based media for a little "Boulder and Brew" session. Many brought families and we all enjoyed a little bouldering and some beer over conversations circling around the 2009 Teva Mountain Games.

Alex Johnson also showed up for the festivities and we were super excited to see her again. She won the 2008 IFSC Bouldering World Cup at the Teva Mountain Games and the recent ABS Nationals in February. Obviously she will be back in Vail June 4-7 for the 2009 Teva Mountain Games and return of the IFSC World Cup Bouldering.

Check out a short video produced by JVonD. It is an awesome recap of the ABS Nationals followed by a short interview with Kynan from USA Climbing, Alex Johnson and the Teva Mountain Games.
